TECHNICAL TOUR OF UNIVERSITÉ LAVAL LABORATORIES AND RESEARCH CENTRE

COSTS : 100 $/person

Université Laval hosts among the most advanced laboratories for researches in pavement, water, structural and soils, and permafrost engineering in cold regions. On campus, a recent 18 M investments allowed to increase significantly the research capacity, with the construction of a heavy vehicle and climate simulator with related infrastructures, as well as the construction of new state-of-the-art laboratories for structural water treatment engineering. An off campus research site in the heart of the unique Quebec’s boreal forest couples with the campus infrastructures to address the rising challenges in engineering. Located an hour drive away from downtown, the Forêt Montmorency hosts research sites on hydrology (BEREV), pavement engineering (SERUL) and snow weather station (NEIGE). Since the 60s, the BEREV consists of an experimental watershed where state-of-the-art equipment are deployed to monitor water pathways across the forested landscape. The SERUL has been at the centre of Université Laval researches on pavement engineering in cold climates for the last near 20 years. NEIGE, a new research facility, is the only place in Canada where more than 30 different sensors are simultaneously deployed to monitor snowfall rates, which are reaching more than 6 meters per year.

This technical tour will take the participant to a full-day visit of on-campus and off-campus research facilities, and to a short guided easy-hike to discover the boreal forest and landscapes at Forêt Montmorency.
