Freezing and thawing are among the most challenging conditions for pavement performance. When coupled with water source and frost sensitive soils, frost penetration is likely to produce significant soil movements, which in turn can deteriorate ride quality and increase cracking. In cold regions submitted to seasonal frost, it is essential to consider adequately freezing and thawing conditions as part of a rigorous pavement design procedure. Because of its severe winters, as well as difficult soil and water regime conditions, Quebec has worked intensively in the past decades towards the fundamental understanding of frost action and the development of adapted design methods and mitigation technologies.

Among others, this full-day short course will cover the following topics:

  • Problem assessment and fundamental aspects of seasonal frost on pavements;
  • Design procedure used in Quebec;
  • Auscultation and frost mitigation techniques;
  • Introduction to computer program CHAUSSEE 2 for frost protection design, modeling and working examples.

PROGRAM
  • Sunday, august 18, 2019, from 9 : 00 am to 4 : 00 pm, with lunch at 12 : 00 pm
  • The class will take place at 1030 rue du Séminaire, Pavillon Laurentienne, Université Laval.
  • This location is well served by the Réseau de Transport de la Capitale, with the following bus routes : 13, 16, 18, 93, 800, 801, 804, 807.

PERMAFROST ENGINEERING APPLIED TO TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE

COSTS : $ 300/person + ($ 15 GST + QST $ 29,93) = $ 344,93*
*Lunch and coffee breaks included.

TRAINERS

Chris Burn, Chancellor's Professor of Geography at Carleton University, Ottawa
Guy Doré, Professor of Civil Engineering at Université Lava, Québec
Heather Brooks, Geotechnical and Arctic Engineer at BGC, Edmonton

This formation will include a description of permafrost environment and dynamics. Principles and methods for site investigation, design and management of roads, airstrips, railways and other linear structures built in permafrost environments will also be explored.

A section of the course will review a newly created methodology and tool for risk analysis of embankment linear infrastructure on permafrost. Topics will include: risk analysis, the calculation and estimation of parameter uncertainty, the engineering basis for the tool's six dangers (total and ice wedge differential settlement, gradient and structural failure of culverts, voids hidden by particle bridging, and active layer detachment), hazard and consequence calculation, and the analysis of risk. We will review a site as an example.

Topics covered:
  • Ground thermal regime
  • Ground ice
  • Context of northern Canada transportation infrastructure
  • Site investigation, Embankment design
  • Special protection techniques
  • Climate change effects including financial
  • Risk analysis tool: Presentation and Software Demonstration

Learning Outcomes:
  • Understanding the context and the challenges of building linear infrastructures on permafrost.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles leading to effective site investigation, design and management of linear structures built on permafrost.
  • Understanding of and ability to apply the principles of risk analysis to the development of linear infrastructure in permafrost contexts.
  • Ability to analyze a complex situation and propose solutions to stabilize structures in unstable permafrost conditions.

PROGRAM
  • Sunday, August 18, from 8 : 00 am to 4 : 30 pm, with lunch at 12 : 00 pm
